If you drive along Steeles Avenue a little east of Trafalgar Road, you'll see, among the fields bordering on Highway 401, a rural historic wood-framed church and a churchyard (cemetery) dating from the pioneer settlement days of Upper Canada. That "little white church on Steeles" is St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Hornby!
The congregation is a small and friendly community. As Julie Zarins, the Rector's Warden, puts it, "We all help out wherever there is a need, working together, worshiping together and hopefully being a welcoming community to all who enter our doors." If you join us for worship (and optional social time afterwards), or for a special scheduled event (click on "latest news" above), you'll find a warm welcome.
Our congregation is diverse. Very few members come from our part of Hornby, where homes are scarce. Many come from other parts of Halton Hills, and a surprising number of folks come in from further away: Milton, Brampton, Mississauga, Burlington, Oakville, Etobicoke, Scarborough.
And our members represent a variety of national backgrounds: Indigenous North American, West Indian, British and Irish, western and eastern European, west African, south Asian.
You'll be very welcome whether you're a one-time visitor from away or someone looking for a church home, and whether you're a committed Christian or a spiritual seeker.
Most of our worship services are choral Eucharist (the Lord's supper with music leadership from our choir), taken mainly from the Canadian Anglican Book of Alternative Services (which you can read on-line [link: https://www.anglican.ca/wp-content/uploads/BAS.pdf]. Everyone is welcome to receive communion, but no one is expected to. Once a month, usually the third Sunday, we have an Anglican service of Morning Prayer. Service generally last about 65 minutes.
If you're a singer, you might well enjoy being part of our friendly choir! Rehearsals are via Zoom on Wednesday evenings, and in person before the Sunday morning service (sometimes after the service as well). The choir takes a break during the summer months, though.
Note that unfortunately we don't currently have a Sunday school or child care.
Our civil address is 14946 Steeles Avenue, Hornby, Ontario L0P 1E0. We're a little east of Eighth Line, and a little west of Ninth Line North (Mountainview Road), and our belfry (bell tower) is easy to spot. We're a few minutes from the Trafalgar Road exit from Highway 401. Our GPS coordinates are 43.58744° N, 79.82009° W.
